JWHOIS is an Internet Whois client that contains an extensible configuration file which defines its operation. The client supports queries to foreign hosts either through the RFC 954 - NICNAME/WHOIS protocol, the RFC 2167 - Referral Whois 1.5 protocol, or HTTP using an external browser.
Upon execution, JWHOIS searches through the its configuration to find the most specific whois server to query. Depending upon the reply from that whois server, JWHOIS can assume the query was successfull and display the result to the user, or optionally redirect the query to another server to find more specific information.
The conclusion is clear: a program must not restrict what jobs its users do with it. Freedom zero must be complete. We need to stop torture, but we can't do it through software licenses. The proper job of software licenses is to establish and protect users' freedom.
We are preparing a EU law proposal to require obfuscated and end-to-end encrypted communications in all telephony and computer appliances sold after 2014. The law shall include ways to ensure its correct implementation and a transition path from the existing unencrypted systems. You can preview the draft legislation here. The summary of the 30c3 YBTI sessions includes a discussion on the proposal. Video: (webm, mp4)
Christian Grothoff: The GNU Name System and the Future of Social Networking with GNUnet
The Domain Name System (DNS) is vital for access to information on the Web. It is thus a target for attackers trying to suppress free access to information. This talk will introduce the design and implementation of the GNU Name System (GNS), a decentralized and censorship-resistant name system. It will then describe how we plan to use GNS as a public key infrastructure for secure social networking.

Notre avenir dépend surtout de nos valeurs. Valoriser la liberté mène aux décisions d’agir pour la garder et l’étendre. Valoriser uniquement le profit, la commodité à court terme, mène toujours à la perte de liberté.
